CAD Technician job description


To produce CAD drawings as required for capital developments, space planning and property transactions.

To provide professional and technical advice and guidance regarding AutoCAD systems and related software for the Facilities and Estates Directorate.

To be responsible for a wide range of electronic documents, data and information relating to the Estate such as MiCAD.

The role is to provide a specialist service to a wide range of departments . The CAD Technician is responsible for producing and developing their own policies and procedures to ensure the drawing library is kept up to date with drawings in a consistent format.


Liaison is required across the Trust especially when dealing with space planning requirements.

Space occupation plans are used for the management of areas and cross-charging of services by the Finance department.

Higher National Certificate or Diploma or NVQ Level 4 in a relevant building, engineering or design subject.

City and Guilds in Computer Aided Design or similar appropriate qualification.



Experience of working as a CAD Technician or in a similar design practice.


Experience of working in an architectural background, surveying buildings, producing drawings, designs & technical details.


A sound knowledge of building design, mechanical and electrical services.


Specialist knowledge and experience of AutoCAD design product software or similar.


Have knowledge and experience of other software packages including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, MiCAD, Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop


Good understanding of the Data Protection Act and the need for confidentiality.

Good understanding of the principles and importance of corporate identity in the production of drawings and presentations.


Key Skills:



The job requires the highest level of technical skills, typically gained through substantial training leading to an approved qualification, where a high degree of accuracy is essential and the outcome of incorrect application would be significant.

To be able to undertake accurate building surveys using digital measuring devices and transfer information to AutoCAD.

Advanced keyboard and IT skills in the use of AutoCAD.

To maintain confidentiality and promote excellent customer liaison at all times.

Participate in effective ‘two way’ communication on all aspects of Estates related issues.

Produce detailed written technical reports, specifications, drawings, etc. to an appropriate professional standard as required.


1. Main duties

To assist in producing and developing policies and procedures to ensure the drawing library is kept up to date with drawings in a consistent format.

To provide a specialist service to produce drawings through interpretation of verbal instructions, sketches, specifications, surveys etc., in order to facilitate the effective processing of development plans.

To keep Space Occupation Plans up to date detailing ownership. Cross reference each room with cost centres to enable service line cost analysis by the Finance Department.

To survey Trust properties regarding production of accurate drawings and the space management responsibilities of the Department.

Work with the Project Managers and Consultants to ensure that accurate information is provided for new developments. Facilitate retrieval of drawings when required to amend and/or provide copies in support of Project Teams.

To evaluate and interpret source material in preparation for re-scaling and compilation. Identify anomalies and solve problems prior to final drawing. Provide preliminary plans that are as accurate as possible.

To work alongside the Senior Building Surveyor to ensure "master" drawings are kept up-to-date, reflecting "as built" details on completion of works. Maintain a drawing register and archive drawings to digital form when appropriate.


To be part of the Estates Team, responsible for Property, Space and Sustainability Management

The purpose of the job is to work alongside the Senior Building Surveyor assisting in the organisation and management of all CAD work for the Trust.•

To carry out survey work, update master drawings as new projects are completed and maintain the existing CAD drawing library.

To help collate and record Facilities & Estates Directorate performance statistics including data from contract support organisations. This data reflects the quality and performance of the Estate with regard to the condition of buildings, functional suitability, space utilisation, energy efficiency, fire precautions, health & safety, portering, catering, cleaning and other hotel services. To assist with annual reporting of statistics e.g. Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC).

To keep Property Portfolio information up to date with regard to Estate volumetrics.

To prepare display panels, from existing drawings and information, to advise and inform the  Board and Trust Board colleagues, other directorates, patients and visitors, of the activity of the Directorate and the development work being undertaken by the Trust.


Use other software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, MiCAD, Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop as appropriate to keep a database of property information as required.

Support other members of the Directorate producing presentations, reports, documents & tenders.

To ensure that all drawings and presentations reflect the  Corporate Visual Identity.

2. Competence

The jobholder is required to participate in the appraisal process and work towards meeting identified development needs.

The jobholder is required to demonstrate on-going continuous professional development.

At no time should the jobholder work outside their defined level of competence. If the post holder has concerns regarding this they should immediately discuss this with their Manager/Supervisor/Consultant.
