Teller Job Description
Delivers excellent customer service
o Provides friendly, comprehensive, accurate, prompt and efficient service to both customers and
o Develops a rapport with regular customer base (regularly greeting by name and maintaining a
knowledge of account ownership/activity)
o Answers basic inquiries regarding interest rates, service charges, and account histories while
complying with disclosure requirements, regulations and consumer privacy policies.
o Performs research and assists with resolving customer problems in a timely manner.
Processes in-person retail and commercial customer transactions
o Receives checking and savings deposits: verifies cash (amounts & validity) and ensures proper
check endorsements, receives proper identification, enters deposits into computer records, and
issues receipts of deposit.
Have the ability to acquire knowledge of and to adhere to various bank policies and government
regulations/laws that govern teller functions (including, but not limited to, Bank Secrecy Act,
Community Reinvestment Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Right to F inancial Privacy Act,
Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, Regulation E )
Have the ability to acquire and apply a working knowledge of bank products and services

Lift and carry up to 50 lbs (teller drawer, cash bags, supplies)
Move around within office and between banking center locations
Cashes checks and processes withdrawals; pays out money after verification of correct
signatures/endorsements, receipt of proper identification, assurance of validity of documents and
confirmation of customer balances.
Accepts loan (mortgage, consumer, etc.) & other types of payments: verifies payment amount,
processes payment as necessary and issues receipts.
Processes other teller related transactions and services (Including, but not limited to, wire
transfers, stop payments, U.S. Savings Bond orders and redemptions, personal money orders,
Checks, cash advances, TT&L payments, etc. )
Cross-sells bank products and services
Promotes and explains products/services such as certificates of deposit, safe deposit boxes,
checking and savings accounts and Internet Banking.
Initiates conversations to uncover customer needs and be capable of referring customers to the
appropriate staff and/or department for products/services that cannot be provided or issues that
cannot be resolved at the teller line.
o Consistently meets or exceeds sales goals set by management.
Completes routine banking center activities
o Opens/closes vault.
o Records and processes night depository bags.
o Accepts and processes check orders.
o Counts, checks and packages coin and currency.
o Balances and replenishes Automatic Teller Machines.
o Scans and transmits work to Proof Department (Corrects piggy-backs, etc. as necessary)
o Admits customers to safe deposit boxes.
o Ensures that the teller station is properly stocked with forms, supplies, etc.
o Maintains neat and clean appearance of banking center (Ensures forms are stocked and neat;
wipes down counters/workspaces; cleans spills/tracked in dirt; picks up trash; etc. )
Contributes to the fulfillment of department and company objectives and goals
o Performs as a team member in allocating and coordinating work flow.
o May assist in training new employees and answering co-worker questions.
o Maintains effective co-worker relationships.
Adheres to all department and company policies and procedures and follows applicable banking
o Examines checks deposited and determines proper funds availability based on regulation
requirements and completes Hold Notices. (Places holds on accounts for uncollected funds.)
o Buys and sells currency from the vault as necessary, ensuring that teller drawer cash limits are not
o Balances cash drawer daily, including periodic batching of cashed checks. Reports any
discrepancies to supervisor as necessary.
o Follows appropriate bank safety/security procedures, including proper banking center
Carries out the duties of vault teller as assigned
o Buys and sells money to other tellers.
o Orders cash supply for the branch; prepares and ships excess cash.
o Verifies all cash in and out of vault.
o Balances vault at the end of each day.
o Maintains cash limits as set by the financial institution.
Completes duties as a back-up to the Personal Banker as required (Opening new accounts, etc. )
Performs additional job related duties as assigned or required
